Features:

• The three smallest bones in the human body, located in the middle ear, are called the auditory ossicles
• The auditory ossicles consist of:
  • Malleus (hammer)
  • Incus (anvil)
  • Stapes (stirrup)
• Their primary function is to transmit incoming sound from the eardrum via the vestibular window to the inner ear and to mechanically amplify the sound
• The inner ear is protected from damage caused by loud noise through a reflex involving the stapedius muscle
• When activated, the stapedius muscle causes the stapes to tilt temporarily, partially transmitting sound to prevent damage
• Vigorous shaking of the auditory ossicles (e.g., during a sneeze or cough) triggers another muscle, the tensor timpani, which:
  • Sticks to the malleus
  • Tightens the eardrum to provide additional protection
• Otosclerosis is a condition where the auditory ossicles become stiffened, leading to progressive hearing loss
• In the model, a cast and enlarged version of the original ossicles are created using micro-CT imaging
