Kanamycin is a broad spectrum aminoglycoside antibiotic derived from Streptomyces kanamyceticus. It is used as an additive in cell culture media for the isolation of Group D Streptococci on Kanamycin Azide Agar and for selection of transformed plant cells containing the neomycin phosphotransferase on a kanamycin medium. Kanamycin sulfate can also be used as selection agent for cells transformed with kanamycin B resistance gene.
Kanamycin acts by binding to the 70S ribosomal subunit, inhibiting translocation.
Kanamycin sulfate is effective against gram negative and gram positive bacteria, as well as mycoplasma.
A typical stock solution is 10mg/ml in water.
Solution should sterilized via filtration through a 0.22 micron filter.
A working concentration for stringent plasmids is 10ug/ml and 50ug/ml for relaxed plasmids.
